Oh how I love family traditions! My favorite, of all time, is cookie cut-outs with my mom. This is something that her mother did with her, and her grandmother did with her mother... and so on and so forth.
We even use some of my Grandma's cut outs today! With some new Oh Joy! ones from Target thrown in ;)
We use Martha Stewart's cookie recipe and it works like a charm every time. Then we lay out our frosting and favorite toppings (my mom is obsessed with Red Hots) and go to town.
Now here's my family secret when it comes to our buttercream frosting- add anise extract. *GASP* People have been asking us for years what makes our frosting taste so good and that's it folks- 4 drops of anise extract. I'd recommend Martha Stewart's buttercream frosting recipe, then just add 4 drops of anise in and mix thoroughly. Ta-Da! You'll be the talk of your next cookie exchange.
